Grove Sports Hall of Fame Gala Induction Ceremony

On, Friday, July 21 from 11:30 am -1:30 pm, Leadership Prep Foundation, Inc. will add 15 new inductees to the roster of Coconut Grove Sports Hall of Fame at the Third Annual Coconut Grove Sports Hall of Fame Gala Induction Ceremony “Breaking Down Barriers Through Sports” at the Courtyard by Marriott, whose national chain is the official sponsor of the NFL, 2649 S Bayshore Drive. 

Highlights include a University of Miami 1983 Miami Hurricanes National Champion football team tribute to Rodney Bellinger DB, “Sports Saving Lives” Community Leadership Awards, the announcement of the Leadership Prep Foundation’s Nathaniel “Traz” Powell Scholarship Fund through Miami Foundation, and the introduction of the proposed Coconut Grove Sports Hall of Fame Virtual Mobile Museum, and the unveiling of plans for The Coconut Grove Sports, Fitness, and Wellness Center.

“The Coconut Grove Sports Hall of Fame inducts and honors those Coconut Grove residents of Bahamian and African American descent who have exemplified outstanding accomplishments and achievements as high school, college, and professional athletes, and coaches, that overcame hardships and obstacles, racism, (especially during Jim Crow segregation), poverty, and inequality to achieve success in their professional and personal life, and their commitment to inspire future generations in sports and life," says Anthony Witherspoon, Founder/President Leadership Prep Foundation.

“Breaking Down Barriers Through Sports," began at George Washington Carver Senior High School, Coral Gables, and Mays Senior High Schools, for such legends as: Olympian Gerald Tinker, a Gold medal track athlete who played for the Falcons (1974—1975) and the Green Bay Packers (1975), the renowned Nathaniel "Traz" Powell, the head coach at George Washington Carver Senior High School who won nine state championships under his leadership, Craig Curry, Coral Gables, first Black quarterback, recognized as one of the most outstanding players in Florida High School history, a record breaking career as quarterback at The University of Minnesota where he received All Big Ten honors; later drafted by The Miami Dolphins, Joe Taylor, a cornerback who had an eight-year career in the NFL with the Chicago Bears, and Neal Colzie, a defensive back who played in the NFL for nine-years with the Oakland Raiders, Miami Dolphins and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, just to name a few.

The primary purpose of the Coconut Grove Sports Hall of Fame is to preserve, value, support, and promote Black Coconut Grove’s Sports heritage, history, athletes, and coaches that have made the sports world a better, equal place, and to establish a network of Coconut Grove, national, and global sports, cultural, health, media, corporate, education, and civic leaders who will help to develop sustainable, healthy communities through sport for social and economic change.
