Trees, it's always about the trees

There are so many people concerned with the fallen trees and saving them. And then there is the bad.  Some home developers are taking advantage of the situation and are taking down healthy trees in their lots where before Irma, they would not be able to do that.

It will be interesting to see the local tableau after things are cleaned up around here.

One plus from TreeWatch is that they worked with Commissioner Ken Russell and the County and managed to save many trees.

If a tree looks salvageable in your neighborhood, put a big red rope or something around it to alert the City or County not to destroy it. I have one friend who woke up one morning and his salvageable tree was gone. He planned to raise it, but the County got to it first.

Can FPL get a special waiver from the tree ordinance? We called FPL twice in the week leading up to Irma, begging them to trim back some junk trees that were hanging from our neighbor's property over the power lines. FPL said that they would have to send an arborist and pull a permit, which would take at least three weeks. Of course, the junk trees severed our power line, and gardeners from the property owner have now completely cut them away.

This seems like a case of unintended consequences.

I do not understand how it is more costly to everyone in the long run to bury the FPL lines than to deal with annual outages and trimming.

In a city like Miami all electric cables should be underground. Commissioner Russell is proposing that. I agree. We should also have a moratorium on planting new trees until a full evaluation has been done on which varieties do best during storms. Proper trimming, maintenance, fertilizing, etc has to be done. In the long term it should be less costly and disrupting. Miami has gone wild planting crap everywhere there is a a space. We have to plan before we put another tree in the ground and make sure there is a budget to maintain the trees pruned and healthy.
