10-Year Master Implementation Plan was Developed

The Coconut Grove BID released a comprehensive roadmap for the Grove's future. Keep in mind that this is all business-related and Center Grove-related, as that is the area that the BID covers. Here is the master plan.

The project was lead by local studio, PlusUrbia Design, with support from the Miami office of the architecture and planning firm, Perkins+Will, it was based on dozens of meetings, a public visioning workshop and numerous interviews with area residents, business owners, civic organizations, and other key stakeholders, as well as more than 400 survey responses.

“This master plan is a launch pad for exciting things to come, and most of all, it ensures that our city municipalities, community groups and stakeholders on the same page. We can now work together to continue elevating the Grove, using this as a resource along the way,” said Ken Russell, Miami City Commissioner.

“We’re thinking critically about the decade ahead and how we can encourage growth and vibrancy while maintaining the Grove’s history and charm, and have already begun working on initiatives to that effect. As we look to the future, the BID and its Board of Directors recognize the importance of transportation-related initiatives to bring people into the District, while providing better and more efficient parking options,” said Nicole Singletary, Executive Director of the Coconut Grove Business Improvement District.

“Since its inception, Coconut Grove has been one of South Florida’s most beloved downtowns. This Implementation Master Plan ensures its continued success amidst growing competition.  The plan sets guidelines for improvements addressing today’s needs, guiding future development while retaining the Grove‘s unique character,” said Juan Mullerat, Principal at Plusurbia Design.

One recent plan is the valet parking which of course is not popular with residents. Another plan was to redo the sidewalks, only to have them torn up a few weeks later to have fiber optics placed under the new sidewalks. So just because plans where discussed does not make them viable.

One proposal is a scramble in the center of the village. You can see the image here, where McFarlane, Grand and Main are a sort of free-for-all. I like this plan, it's used in many places around the world. Auto traffic comes to a complete halt and pedestrians are free to maneuver through the intersection however they like.

In addition to containing specific short, medium, and long-term actions to guide growth in the Grove in a positive way, the Master Implementation Plan is intentionally flexible and can be modified to keep pace with changing conditions, needs, and desires. Each action falls under the jurisdiction of one or more governmental agencies or civic groups, and may also require broader inter-agency coordination and support.

I've always thought that we should do the Center Grove a pedestrian area. We could close Grande Ave. starting at Virginia Street and ending at Commodore Plaza., and Main Highway from McFarlane to where The Barnacle starts (I think it's called William Ave.) It would be so much better, similar to what small towns are doing in Europe. It would be hard to get used to it at the beginning but I think it is worth a try.
