Local School Students to Participate in Walk Out

Today, March 14, more than 60 local high school students from Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart, along with City Commissioner Ken Russell will walk from The Barnacle to City Hall to request legislative changes that improve safety and commemorate the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, a month ago. The student-led effort is part of a national “walk-out” day organized in schools and universities across the country to honor the lives of the 17 people killed at Stoneman Douglas on Valentine’s Day.

The students will “walk out” during a free period starting around 10:15 am, and walk about a mile to Miami City Hall. City Commissioner Ken Russell will participate in the walk and will host the group at City Hall at 11 am, where he will discuss what the City of Miami is doing to improve safety in all schools and his experiences working with Parkland students and teachers in Tallahassee in February.

“We can never forget the 17 lives that were lost,” said Commissioner Russell. “We have to do everything we can to protect our communities from violence. The conversation about gun reform, mental health and new safety measures is not finished. This is just the beginning of a long fight and it’s inspiring that so many of our young people want to be involved in these conversations.”
